Brooke Chandler Joins New Zealand U21 Squad
Auckland’s own Brooke Chandler has made a significant leap in her field hockey career. The Harvard first-year player is now part of New Zealand’s U21 squad, preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 program cycle. This opportunity kicks off with an extended squad camp starting in July.
Dane Lett, the Regional High Performance and Pathways Lead, emphasized the importance of this selection. “Joining the NZ Under 21 squads is a crucial milestone. It marks an exciting step in an athlete’s journey,” he shared. He also highlighted the period as one of growth and challenge, indicating strong support for the athletes as they develop their skills.
Chandler has already showcased her talent on the field. Last season, she was a vital part of Harvard’s defense, appearing in 19 games and starting 17 of them. Her contributions helped the team achieve impressive stats, landing second in goals against average and goals allowed. The team also tied for fourth in shutouts. Chandler’s performance in the postseason was crucial as the Crimson advanced to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals.
Historically, Harvard Field Hockey had its best season ever in 2025, finishing with a record of 19-2. This was not only the highest number of wins in a single season but also marked the program’s second appearance in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals.
As sports evolve, athlete pathways are becoming more prominent. According to a 2022 study by the NCAA, participation in collegiate sports has increased by over 5% in recent years. This trend reflects the growing focus on athletics at the university level, providing more opportunities for young athletes.
