Seth Meyers Reflects on Stephen Colbert’s Final ‘Late Show’: A Heartfelt Farewell to an Era in Television

Stephen Colbert’s departure from the late-night landscape has left a noticeable gap. Seth Meyers, host of Late Night with Seth Meyers, expressed his feelings about this shift. “I’m heartbroken,” he shared in an interview, acknowledging the loss not just of a colleague but also of a cherished time slot in television.

In Colbert’s absence, CBS is opting for a different approach. They plan to fill the 11:35 p.m. slot with Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen. This strategy is somewhat unusual, as typically networks would choose a new host from within their ranks for such a prime time.

Colbert isn’t slowing down, though. He has plans to co-write the screenplay for the next Lord of the Rings movie, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. Meyers is excited for Colbert’s upcoming projects. “I think he’s been preparing for this next step for years, and it’s going to be thrilling for all of us,” he said, highlighting his optimism.

In May 2026, Meyers attended the premiere of Rafa, a Netflix documentary about tennis star Rafael Nadal. Directed by Zach Heinzerling—Meyers’ brother-in-law—the documentary delves into who Nadal is beyond the tennis court. “It’s not just a sports documentary; it captures Rafa as a person,” Meyers noted.

This documentary will launch on Netflix on May 29 and is expected to be submitted for Emmy consideration. Interestingly, Meyers also mentioned that his show is up for Emmys this year. “I’m glad we’re not in the same category,” he joked, emphasizing his loyalty to his family despite the competitive nature of awards season.

The landscape of late-night TV is evolving. As viewers, we’ll see how these changes impact our viewing habits and the nature of comedic commentary in the years to come. For more on this shifting genre, check out the latest insights from outlets like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
