Tonight, after sunset, look west to spot a beautiful crescent moon near the Beehive Cluster in the constellation Cancer. This cluster, also known as Messier 44, is home to many bright young stars.
The moon will appear low on the horizon, about 5 degrees to the upper left of the Beehive Cluster. Jupiter will shine brightly about 20 degrees to the lower right of the moon, while Venus and Mercury create a diagonal line further along. Mercury is tricky to see, as it’s just above the horizon and may be lost in the sun’s fading light. A clear view will help, but spotting it could still be a challenge!
A pair of good binoculars can enhance your viewing experience. They will let you see the Beehive Cluster’s stars more clearly, especially against the soft glow of a 36% illuminated moon.
If you have a small telescope, you’ll be able to explore fascinating lunar details. Theophilus crater is a standout, sitting close to the dark line that separates night from day on the moon, known as the terminator. The Piccolomini impact site is a bit further south and offers interesting features like its central peak, formed when rock rebounded from the impact.
Both craters will look particularly dramatic this evening as their eastern walls will be filled with shadows. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss!
