This year, the 31st annual Balboa Island Parade promises to be an exciting event. The theme is a heartfelt tribute to the Beach Boys, featuring their iconic song “Good Vibrations.” The parade will kick off on Sunday, May 31, at 11 a.m.
Jack Callahan, the parade chairman, shared his inspiration for the theme. “With Brian Wilson passing last year, I thought ‘Good Vibrations’ would honor both his legacy and the music that shaped Southern California,” he explained. Callahan has been a vital part of the parade since 1995, with his signature hula skirt and coconut bra, and he credits 85 volunteers for their invaluable help.
One of the highlights of the parade is the music. Callahan notes, “The after-party always features fantastic bands. This year, the ‘60s surf music will make it easy for everyone to enjoy.” Chris Farmer’s band will perform Beach Boys classics and more, bringing the vibrant sounds to life. Farmer, who has toured with the Beach Boys, expresses his excitement for the opportunity. “It feels great to play that amazing music for the parade,” he said.
This year’s lineup features a mix of returning favorites, including the United States Marine Corps Band and school bands. There will also be dancers, classic cars, and an array of beloved pets. A notable part of the parade is the “Patio-Chair” drill team, celebrating its 25th anniversary. Founder Merridee Banas emphasized the teamwork that goes into their performance. “It’s physically demanding, but we love the camaraderie it fosters,” she explained.
With 18 to 20 regular members and five newcomers this year, the drill team remains a crowd favorite. Choreographer Holly Walls brings over a decade of experience to the team, residing in Dana Point. The friends formed bonds through their shared passion. “It’s about the friendships,” Banas remarked. “We all have fun and enjoy being part of something special.”
The 31st Annual Balboa Island Parade is set to begin on the Balboa Island bridge and travel down Marine Avenue. With a festive atmosphere, cheering crowds, and a sense of community, it’s an event not to be missed. For more information, check out the official site here.
