Lionsgate Adjusts Release Dates for ‘The Resurrection of Christ’: What You Need to Know About ‘Part Two’ Now Coming in 2028!

Lionsgate has updated the release schedule for Mel Gibson’s upcoming film, The Resurrection of The Christ. The first part will now premiere on May 6, 2027, which is Ascension Day, while the second part is set for May 25, 2028. Previously, Part One was slated for March 26, 2027, but it will now share the spotlight with Day Drinker, starring Johnny Depp, which will take the March date.

Filming for this highly anticipated sequel to The Passion of the Christ wrapped up after 134 days in various locations across Italy, including Rome and Matera. The cast features notable actors like Jaakko Ohtonen and Rupert Everett.

Lionsgate will distribute the film in North America, the UK, and parts of Latin America, teaming up with various international partners for distribution in other regions. This strategic decision comes after the studio recognized that the original dates were too close together for such large productions.

Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, praised Gibson’s vision, highlighting that the images from the set look like masterpieces brought to life. He expressed confidence that the film will resonate with audiences looking for depth and emotional storytelling.

Gibson himself shared his gratitude towards the cast and crew, stating that this project is a significant part of his life’s work. He emphasized that it’s more than just a film for him; it’s a mission to tell a vital story that he believes is central to human history.

Historically, The Passion of the Christ opened in 2004 with a massive $83 million and went on to gross over $610 million worldwide. This success paved the way for the potential of faith-based films in the box office. It held the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. for years and received three Oscar nominations.

As we await these new releases, the anticipation among viewers is palpable, particularly on social media platforms where conversations about faith-themed cinema continue to flourish. Fans reminisce about the impact of the original film and express excitement for the sequel’s narrative scope.

With Mel Gibson’s dedication and Lionsgate’s strategic planning, these films aim to continue challenging storytelling norms while resonating with audiences around the world.
