Exclusive First Look: Mel Gibson’s ‘Resurrection of the Christ’ Reveals Jesus and New Release Date!

Lionsgate is changing its schedule for the two-part sequel to The Resurrection of Christ. Part one will now come out on May 6, 2027, pushed back from March 26, 2027. Part two has also been delayed, moving from May 6, 2027, to May 25, 2028.

In exciting news, we’ve seen the first look at Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus Christ. He follows in the footsteps of Jim Caviezel, who played the role in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. That film, released in 2004, made over $610 million worldwide and is known as the highest-grossing indie film ever.

The cast of Resurrection includes Mariela Garriga, Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Rupert Everett. Gibson shared, “This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.”

Alongside these changes, Lionsgate has also scheduled Daydrinker, starring Johnny Depp, for March 26, 2027. This marks Depp’s return to Hollywood after a tumultuous period following his divorce from Amber Heard. The film features a yacht bartender (played by Madelyn Cline) who gets involved with a mysterious guest (Depp) and a criminal figure (Penélope Cruz). The project is directed by Marc Webb, known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man.

The release of these films comes at a time when the box office is showing signs of recovery post-pandemic. According to recent statistics from the Motion Picture Association, global box office revenue reached $21.4 billion in 2022, a significant rebound from previous years. This reflects a growing trend in audience engagement with theatrical releases.

As people eagerly anticipate these films, discussions on social media reveal a mix of excitement and skepticism. Many fans are drawn to the spiritual themes, while others express concerns about how these stories will be portrayed.

Overall, Lionsgate is navigating both its upcoming releases and the changing landscape of the film industry. The focus remains on delivering compelling stories that resonate with audiences.
