Lunar Outpost is on a mission to shape the future of lunar exploration. Based in Colorado, this ambitious company is already making waves with its innovative lunar rover, Eagle, and its robotic mini-rover that recently reached the moon aboard a commercial lander. This month, they announced a significant boost to their plans, securing $30 million in funding for a new rover called Pegasus.
Concept images show Pegasus as a smaller, sleeker version of Eagle, reminiscent of NASA’s historic “moon buggy” from the Apollo missions. Lunar Outpost plans to have Pegasus ready for delivery by the end of 2027, aiming for a launch to the moon in 2028, which aligns with NASA’s Artemis 4 mission.
Notably, Lunar Outpost has more active lunar missions planned than any other commercial company. Their vision goes beyond just rovers; they aim to create a whole ecosystem for lunar infrastructure. Michael Moreno, the company’s Vice President of Strategy, emphasizes that building this infrastructure won’t be solely the task of astronauts. Instead, they’ll rely heavily on robotic technology to do much of the work. “We’ll use autonomous rovers for tasks like building habitats and energy storage,” he explained.
In April 2026, during the Space Symposium in Colorado, Moreno shared insights on the importance of autonomous technologies for sustained lunar presence. The company’s rovers will tackle tasks related to infrastructure, such as constructing launch pads and improving the lunar surface, making human habitation more viable.
Lunar Outpost also faced setbacks. Their first robotic MAPP (Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform) rover couldn’t explore the moon due to a mishap during its landing in March 2025. Despite the challenges, four more MAPP missions are already underway, paving the way for a historic collaboration between astronauts and rovers during the Artemis 4 mission. Moreno noted, “This will be the first time an astronaut works side by side with a rover on the moon.”
This partnership will enhance lunar exploration by allowing astronauts to study and understand lunar regolith more effectively, crucial for future missions. They envision a fruitful partnership where both robots and astronauts converge in scientific research on the moon.
There’s also a significant economic incentive. NASA’s recent contracts for lunar vehicle development have a total value of $4.6 billion through 2039. Lunar Outpost is keenly aware of this financial landscape but asserts that their vision extends beyond profit. Moreno described their goal as a “human imperative,” believing that settling other planets is essential for humanity’s future. “The moon is a stepping stone for deeper space exploration and for making humans a multi-planetary species,” he concluded.
