Hoda Kotb’s Commencement Speech
Hello, everyone! It’s a joy to be here today. Big thanks to President Tetlow and all the families supporting the Class of 2026. Let’s dive into some lessons I’ve learned along my journey.
Don’t Stress About Job Hunting
First off, if you don’t have a job yet, don’t panic. When I graduated, I was in the same boat. I had one interview, and all my friends were scoring jobs with perks while I was still figuring things out. I even drove to Richmond to land a job, only to get rejected. Then it was off to Roanoke, then Memphis, and I faced 27 rejections in just 10 days.
In moments of despair, it’s essential to remember that all it takes is one person to believe in you. I met Stan, who saw potential in my worst tape. That’s how I learned: you only need one yes to change everything.
Seize Opportunities
Next, don’t hesitate to jump on opportunities, even when you feel unprepared. I was working on a story in Mississippi when Stan asked me to anchor the news because the regular host was sick. I had never done it before, and it was a disaster. But guess what? I got a second chance. If the door opens, walk through it, even if you’re unsure.
Find What You Love
Find what makes you excited and find a way to earn a living from it. Take Ken Baring, who chased success and wealth. He bought NFL teams but still felt unfulfilled. It wasn’t until he found purpose helping those in need that he discovered true happiness.
Work for a Greater Cause
Your work should impact something bigger than yourself. Whether that’s through philanthropy or your day-to-day job, find ways to contribute to your community.
Disconnect from Technology
A tip: don’t use your phone as an alarm. When you do, it’s tempting to scroll through the chaos of the world right away. Grab a real alarm clock. Start your day on your terms.
Your Journey is Unique
Remember, your path is your own. Don’t compare your timeline to others. Sometimes good things arrive later in life. Just be patient; what’s meant for you will come at the right time.
Focus on What Matters
Life is about where you choose to direct your attention. I interviewed actress Cheryl Lee Ralph, who shared a powerful moment with Robert De Niro. Instead of dwelling on his doubts about her, she chose to fix her gaze on her strengths.
Understanding Happiness vs. Joy
Distinguishing between happiness and joy is crucial. Happiness might come from a night out, while joy comes from inner peace and fulfilling relationships.
Remember Your Roots
Look at your hands. They have held the people who supported you and will help you create your future. That connection matters.
Stay Connected
Lastly, stay in touch with those who’ve cheered for you. Your loved ones want to hear from you.
Believe in your ability to make it anywhere. You’re ready for every challenge ahead. The world is waiting for your magic. Class of 2026, go out there and shine!
