From Catcher to Coach: The Journey of Joel Applebee
Joel Applebee’s path began in Russell, Kansas, where he initially dreamed of playing baseball. He tried out for the Kansas State baseball team hoping to be a part of that world. Though he didn’t make the cut, he found his true calling in education.
“I always wanted to go to K-State,” Applebee recalls. “I loved the people and the possibilities here.” He graduated in 2000, majoring in education, and soon ventured into coaching.
His first gig? Coaching the K-State girls’ club softball team. “A fraternity brother roped me into it, but I ended up loving the experience,” he says. This role taught him valuable skills like organization and communication, which are crucial for any coach.
Education runs deep in Applebee’s family. His grandfather, Gail, was a beloved principal and recently inducted into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame. The impact of family on education fueled Applebee’s passion further.
Fast forward to today. At Mill Valley High School, Applebee has become a legend. With a remarkable 143-43 record and 7 state championships, he is known for his unique coaching style. “What are you doing to be the best version of yourself today?” he often asks his players, encouraging them to focus on growth rather than perfection.
Interestingly, this approach aligns with recent educational research. A study from the University of California highlighted that students who embrace a growth mindset tend to perform better academically. This principle is not just about sports; it’s about lifelong learning.
Applebee understands the challenges of success. “Every team aims to beat us because they want that signature win,” he notes. He emphasizes the importance of staying hungry and reminding his team that winning a title doesn’t define a successful season.
The Mill Valley community plays a huge role in their success, with fans turning out in droves to support the team. The “Jag Walk” tradition, where players and coaches walk to the stadium amid cheering fans, has become a cherished ritual.
Reflecting on his journey, Applebee aims for continuous improvement. He gathers his coaches for summer meetings to plan strategies and foster a strong team culture. Prior to every game, the players lift weights early in the morning—a testament to their dedication.
Applebee’s hard work has paid off. He is set to be inducted into the Greater KC Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2026—an honor he never imagined would come his way. “It’s very special to be recognized by my peers,” he says.
Through it all, Applebee remains focused on what matters most. As he prepares for another season, his message remains clear: success comes from daily improvement and teamwork. After all, in football, every member must play their part for victory.
With a career that continues to inspire, Joel Applebee shows that passion, dedication, and a supportive community can lead to greatness.
