A group of top tennis players has decided to limit their media appearances, reflecting ongoing tensions with tournament organizers. This isn’t the first time they’ve raised concerns. Last year, they met with Grand Slam officials to discuss issues that keep coming up.
One major point of contention is prize money. The players argue that the percentage of earnings shared with them is too low. They want to see tournaments allocate 22% of their revenue to prize money by 2030. Currently, the French Open offers just 15%, which the players feel doesn’t reflect their role in generating revenue.
For context, prize money has been increasing, but at different rates. For example, this year’s French Open saw a 9.5% increase, while the US Open last year had a 20% jump, and the Australian Open earlier this year almost 16%. These figures highlight players’ frustrations, as they see discrepancies in how tournaments value their contributions.
Amélie Mauresmo, the director of the French Open, expressed sadness over the players’ decision but remains hopeful for resolution. She and Gilles Moretton, the president of the French Tennis Federation, will meet with former WTA chairman Larry Scott, who represents the players.
Interestingly, there’s been chatter about a possible boycott. Taylor Fritz, one of the participating players, was cautious in discussing this option. He said, “I don’t want to start throwing around the ‘b-word’ unless we’re ready.” He emphasized that if the issues aren’t addressed, a serious discussion about taking a stand may be necessary.
According to a recent study by the International Tennis Federation, the disparity in prize money distribution affects not just the top players but also those ranked lower. Many players struggle with financial stability, making the push for fairer prize money even more crucial.
