On May 22, 2023, DigiHaat, a government-supported e-commerce platform, announced a significant expansion. It has launched its ride-hailing service, ‘DigiHaat Rides,’ in 55 cities across India. This includes major cities like Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Kolkata, as well as many smaller towns.
What sets DigiHaat apart is its focus on a cooperative model. Unlike traditional ride-hailing services, DigiHaat allows drivers to own their cooperative. This means they have more control over their earnings and can make crucial decisions about their work. For customers, this model promises transparent pricing and a sense of community accountability.
Rahul Vij, CEO of Nirmit Bharat, emphasized the platform’s mission. He stated, “We are not building another ride-sharing app. We aim to create a digital structure that prioritizes citizens over shareholders.” This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Digital India, which aims to enhance the “Ease of Living” for all citizens.
Interestingly, recent surveys indicate that consumers in India are increasingly leaning towards platforms that prioritize community and transparency. In fact, a 2023 report found that 70% of users prefer services that promote cooperative engagement over traditional ones. This shows that DigiHaat’s approach may resonate well with the country’s evolving preferences.
DigiHaat’s ride service isn’t just a standalone offering. It integrates with its other services like metro ticketing, grocery shopping, and food delivery. This creates a unified platform to cater to various everyday needs.
