New Delhi: On May 26, India will host the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, a timely event amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific, specifically in areas like the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean.
This meeting aims to strengthen the Quad’s role as a crucial part of the Indo-Pacific strategy. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing India’s growing importance in regional security discussions.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, discussions included advancements in areas like defense, trade, energy security, and education. Both leaders also discussed the need for peaceful resolutions to ongoing conflicts.
In a gesture of partnership, Rubio invited Modi to visit the White House soon. This invitation highlights the strong ties being formed under the current US administration, which sees India as pivotal in maintaining regional stability.
Looking back, the Quad began as a humanitarian partnership during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami relief efforts. Over time, it evolved into a critical strategic alliance, particularly to counter China’s growing influence in the region.
However, the Quad faced setbacks, such as Australia’s withdrawal in 2008 due to fears of offending China. The group regained momentum in 2017, encouraged by a more assertive China and the introduction of the ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’ concept.
Today, the Quad addresses not just security concerns but also economic stability and health initiatives, including vaccine distribution and semiconductor collaboration. Recent data shows that these collaborations are gaining traction, with 61% of regional leaders believing in the Quad’s effectiveness in promoting a secure Indo-Pacific.
Experts like Mayank Chhaya express caution, noting that while the Quad is significant for India, its prominence may not be as high on the US agenda under the current administration. In contrast, Ruchika Sharma from the Usanas Foundation sees the upcoming meeting as a vital opportunity for closer US-India relations amid global uncertainties. Her insights suggest that the Quad remains a platform for sharing vital resources and expertise, especially concerning energy security.
As India hosts this meeting, it reinforces its growing status as a vital player in Indo-Pacific geopolitics. The event underscores the need for collaboration amidst shifting global dynamics, signaling that India’s role will likely become increasingly important in shaping the future of international relations.
