Canton will host an engaging talk about the importance of locally sourced, healthy foods and the challenges facing the U.S. food system. This event is set for Saturday, May 30, at noon, taking place at the Canton United Methodist Church.
Joe Eisele, co-owner of River Valley Farm Market, will share his journey from traditional dairy farming to a direct-to-consumer model. After studying at Cornell and initially planning a large-scale farm, he made a bold switch to focus on connecting directly with customers. Joe’s story is one of passion for farming and a commitment to healthier food choices.
Growing up in Glen Cove, near New York City, Joe didn’t have the typical background of a farmer. But spending time in Andes, NY, working on a neighbor’s dairy farm sparked his interest in agriculture. He later studied at SUNY Delhi, SUNY Cobleskill, and graduated from Cornell in 2002, diving deep into raising beef cattle while gaining experience on commercial dairy farms.
In his mid-30s, Joe began to question U.S. agricultural practices. He saw how chemicals and runoff were linked to chronic diseases. This realization drove him to create a better food system. For the past 13 years, he has focused on giving people access to high-quality protein sources while building a community that promotes sustainable practices.
The talk is organized by Waste Not Permaculture, a nonprofit that promotes sustainability in St. Lawrence County. After starting in Brooklyn in 2015, they moved to Canton in 2022 to be closer to New York’s agricultural heartland. Waste Not hosts films and interviews with local farmers to increase awareness of sustainable practices. You can learn more about them [here](https://wastenotperma.org).
The talk has a suggested fee of $10, but all are welcome. Registration is required, and you can sign up [here](https://bit.ly/eiseletalk) or reach out via phone or email as provided.
After the talk, Waste Not will hold its annual meeting, giving attendees a chance to learn more about their initiatives.
