On May 23, 2026, the Rotary E-Club of One Nigeria teamed up with the People Planet and Peace Foundation to plant mangrove trees in Akodo Ise, Lagos State. This initiative is part of an effort to combat local challenges like flooding, high salinity, and coastal storms.
Mr. Seun Agboola, the Charter President of the Rotary E-Club, explained that the club operates online, offering flexibility while still providing community service opportunities. Rotary International, which has over 46,000 clubs worldwide, emphasizes environmental protection. In 2020, the organization officially made “Supporting the Environment” one of its main focuses, highlighting its critical role in health and sustainable development.
Agboola shared that Rotary’s environmental initiatives include not just mangrove restoration but also tree planting, river clean-ups, reducing plastic waste, and promoting solar energy. They also work on conserving biodiversity and educating schools about environmental issues. Rotary’s goal is to protect freshwater ecosystems and improve water quality, and they collaborate with the United Nations Environment Programme for additional support.
At an awareness session, Ms. Olabisi Kumuyi from the Climate Beyond Borders Caravan advised the community against indiscriminate tree cutting. This kind of awareness is crucial as environmental degradation accelerates globally. Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi, founder of LUFASI Nature Park, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of living in harmony with nature.
He pointed out that while we depend on nature for life, human actions often harm it. This raises a critical question: How can we balance development with environmental sustainability? According to a recent survey by the World Wildlife Fund, over 60% of people believe protecting the environment should be a top priority for governments worldwide.
As more groups adopt eco-friendly practices, awareness is key. Social media campaigns are becoming popular, encouraging others to engage in environmental initiatives.
