Frémaux hinted at the complexities of film competitions when he mentioned the need for certain films to anchor different categories at festivals. Notably, the popular “Paper Tiger” might find itself nominated for screenplay, even if it missed out on the main competition.
Recent changes at the Academy have made it easier for winners from major festivals, including Cannes, to gain Oscar nominations. Christian Mungiu’s “Fjord,” which won the Palme d’Or, is likely to make waves. He spoke passionately about the role of cinema in addressing significant societal issues. This year, several entries are in the mix for best international film, including “The Black Ball” from Spain and “Coward” from Belgium.
As the festival concluded, Tilda Swinton captured the spirit of the event, proclaiming, “Vive le cinéma!” highlighting the vital role of films in our society.
