The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) is stepping up to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). They’ve launched a P7 billion ($125 million) loan program and a new weekly podcast aiming to tackle business challenges faced by entrepreneurs.
At a recent meeting of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce, PCCI president Ferdinand “Perry” Ferrer shared exciting updates. He emphasized that these initiatives are vital for helping MSMEs thrive, especially during uncertain economic times. Melanie Ng, PCCI area vice president for Visayas, helped secure the financing package, which includes P2 billion for women-led businesses, P3 billion for export development, and P2 billion for returning overseas Filipino workers.
Ferrer said, “We’ve been exploring ways to assist MSMEs.” This funding is part of a broader strategy to help small businesses navigate tough conditions.
Weekly Podcast Launch
Announced during the same meeting was the launch of a weekly podcast called “I-Arta Mo!” This initiative aims to discuss pressing business issues across the nation. The podcast will provide a platform for local leaders to voice operational challenges directly to government officials.
Cebu: A Growing Tech Hub
Ferrer described Cebu as the “Southern Technology Hub of the Philippines.” The province excels in several sectors, including electronics manufacturing, tourism, and real estate. He noted the robust growth in their electronics industry, especially in the Mactan Economic Zone, which produces key components for global markets.
However, he cautioned about external risks, such as geopolitical tensions, rising shipping costs, and fluctuating energy prices. To combat these challenges, he suggested diversifying supply chains and building stronger financial buffers for MSMEs.
Preparing for AI
Ferrer also highlighted the urgency of preparing for artificial intelligence’s impact on business. He believes that while AI won’t replace workers, those who embrace it will outpace those who do not. He called for better training programs in partnership with universities and government agencies.
He concluded with a rallying cry for businesses to collaborate and invest in Cebu’s future. “This is Cebu’s moment,” he said. “The world is watching.”
Recent statistics indicate that SMEs are responsible for about 60% of the Philippines’ jobs, underscoring the importance of supporting these enterprises. With financial backing and new platforms for discussion, there’s hope that Cebu can lead the way in fostering a resilient, innovative economy.
