Georgia Tech took down Carolina 13-6 in the ACC baseball championship. This match showcased two of the top teams in the nation. They faced each other four times this season, and the total run difference was just three runs. Both teams are ready to fight for a spot in the College World Series as Memorial Day approaches.
It’s important to note that the ACC tournament doesn’t really predict NCAA success. The last time Carolina won the ACC Tournament and made it to Omaha was in 2013. Of their eight College World Series appearances this century, only two have coincided with an ACC Tournament title.
This past weekend, Carolina’s starting pitchers struggled more than usual. Jason DeCaro, Ryan Lynch, and Folger Boaz allowed 12 earned runs across just 10 innings. This performance raises concerns as they prepare for tougher competition. Georgia Tech has a powerful lineup, but Carolina needs stronger outings from its starters to succeed in the postseason.
On the bright side, the Tar Heels have two exceptional arms in their bullpen: Walker McDuffie and Caden Glauber. These pitchers can change the game at any moment. Effectively using them will be crucial for Carolina’s success.
Despite pitching challenges, the Tar Heels’ offense seems ready for the postseason. They scored 29 runs in three games at the tournament, including a standout performance of 22 hits against Pitt, their highest since 2010.
Owen Hull has been a driving force, with 18 RBIs in his last seven games and hitting over .400 this weekend. Another player to watch is Rom Kellis V, who hit two homers on Saturday and added RBIs on Sunday. He’s becoming a key part of the lineup just in time for NCAA play.
Defense was another highlight for Carolina, with only one error in three games, which was by a pitcher. They executed crucial double plays, keeping their fielding percentage at .981, the tenth best in the nation.
Carolina’s pitching issues, while concerning, were highlighted against a top offense. If they can maintain their hitting and defense as they did in Charlotte, they may not need dominant pitching to advance. They just need to throw strikes and wisely use their bullpen stars, Glauber and McDuffie.
As for what’s next, regional host sites will be revealed soon, and Chapel Hill is expected to host a baseball regional next weekend. The NCAA tournament field will be announced on Monday at noon. Postseason baseball at Boshamer Stadium is a cherished tradition for Carolina fans, and season ticket holders will have priority for tickets. Stay tuned for more ticket information this week.
