Hyderabad: Indian households are changing their grocery habits as more people seek high-protein diets. Foods like whey powder, Greek yogurt, protein chips, shakes, and fortified breakfast items are becoming favorites on quick-commerce platforms.
Instamart, part of Swiggy, reported a 150% increase in protein-related orders over the past two years. This shift shows how health-conscious Indian consumers are becoming. Bengaluru stands out as the top city for protein purchases, but smaller cities are catching up quickly. Some of these cities, including Nagpur and Jaipur, are seeing protein consumption grow over 200% faster than in larger metropolises.
Hari Kumar G, Instamart’s Chief Business Officer, explained, “We’re moving from basic needs to aspirational choices. Better-for-you foods are now the norm.” The goal is to make high-quality nutrition accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live.
India’s Protein Cart in 2026
Despite facing global challenges, the demand for protein-rich products is strong. Traditional staples remain popular, but newer items are gaining traction. The most ordered products include protein eggs, paneer, chicken, chickpeas, and various protein snacks.
Notably, protein snacks saw a staggering 300% growth, while yogurt options and Greek yogurt also saw significant increases. About 60% of customers searching for these items ended up making a purchase.
Vegetarian options are also on the rise. Sales of soya chunks more than doubled, and tofu sales grew by 87%. Peanut butter emerged as the most popular protein term on the platform, reflecting broader dietary trends. Traditional ingredients like makhana and chana sattu are also gaining popularity among consumers.
Shopping Trends
Some users are spending big on protein staples. One customer in Chennai spent over ₹2,71,000 on peanut-based proteins. In Mumbai, Delhi, and Surat, customers frequently spend more than ₹20,000 on whey protein. Interestingly, the peak times for protein orders are between 7-11 AM, often for breakfast, with late-night orders also becoming common.
This trend mirrors a broader shift toward healthier eating across India. According to a recent survey, about 75% of people are prioritizing nutrition in their diets, and many are turning to online platforms for convenience. This signals a significant transformation in how dietary choices are being made in the country.
