LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Memorial Day brought shoppers out in droves. Many filled grocery stores, picking up last-minute items for their holiday feasts and planning for the week ahead.
Carts were overflowing and lines stretched long, but the atmosphere was cheerful. Ramon, a shopper, shared his experience, saying, “I was unsure about what to buy at first, but you know how it goes—once you’re at Kroger, you’ll figure something out.” He was on the hunt for cheeseburger sliders.
With the cost of living rising, families are feeling the strain. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, grocery prices have surged by 3.2% compared to last year. The National Retail Federation attributes this to increases in labor, energy, and transportation costs, which have led retailers to pass expenses on to customers.
“Prices have been outrageous, likely due to rising gas costs,” said shopper Becky. The pressure to stay within budget is palpable for many. However, Memorial Day sales provided some relief. “I found a sale on Cheez-Its: buy two, get two free. That was a nice surprise,” Jeremy said.
For some, pricing was more manageable than expected. Katie shared, “I got spare ribs for half off. Otherwise, it would just be beans and tortillas for us. It’s insane out there.” This kind of strategic shopping reflects a growing trend, as many families seek ways to cope with rising costs.

It’s just a must.”
