India and Canada are on the verge of finalizing a free trade agreement (FTA) by the end of this year. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in Canada, emphasizing the importance of completing negotiations swiftly. He expresses optimism that both nations can boost their bilateral trade from $17 billion to $50 billion by 2030.
Goyal mentioned that he is leading a sizable business delegation, the largest ever from India, with over 112 companies making the journey to explore opportunities in Canada. The relationship between India and Canada is described as significant for global prosperity and security, highlighting mutual trust and cooperation.
In discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, they acknowledged how a free trade deal could drastically benefit both countries. Carney referred to the agreement as a potential “game changer” for Canadian workers and businesses. The trade talks are focused on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with two rounds already completed and the third ongoing.
India exports various goods such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and electronic items to Canada. In return, Canada supplies pulses, precious stones, and crude oil. Additionally, India’s services sector exports include telecommunications and IT services, which are crucial for both economies.
Experts believe that this deal could reshape trade dynamics in North America and South Asia. According to a recent report by the World Bank, countries engaged in free trade agreements tend to see an average increase of 15% in overall trade volume within five years of implementation.
Public response has been overwhelmingly positive, especially among Indian students and communities already established in Canada. This FTA could enhance opportunities in sectors like technology, agriculture, and education, benefiting a large number of people on both sides.
Both nations are excited about the future. As cooperation deepens, this agreement could pave the way for even greater partnerships across industries, contributing to robust growth in both economies.
