Experience the Future: Ferrari Unveils Luce, Its Revolutionary 5-Seat Electric Vehicle

ROME — Ferrari unveiled its first fully electric car, the Luce, on May 25. This marks a big shift for the luxury sports car brand, which is stepping into a market where competitors like Porsche and Lamborghini have slowed down due to lower demand.

The four-door Luce, which means “light” in Italian, was created with input from Jony Ive, formerly of Apple. This car is designed to seat five people comfortably, targeting affluent families looking for luxury and high-tech features. It boasts a spacious 600-litre boot for extra convenience.

Set to be priced at €550,000 (about S$817,845), deliveries of the Luce are expected to commence in late 2026. According to CEO Benedetto Vigna, it’s been five years in the making.

The Luce aims to blend Ferrari’s high-performance heritage with cutting-edge technology. It features four electric motors—one at each wheel—generating over 1,000 horsepower and allowing speeds above 310 kph. Impressively, the car can travel over 500 kilometers on a single charge. Ferrari is betting that a younger generation, more in tune with technology and AI, will embrace luxurious electric vehicles, moving away from the roaring engines of the past.

Ferrari is looking to expand in markets like China, where electric vehicles are already popular, and larger petrol cars face heavy taxes. Chief marketing officer Enrico Galliera noted a demand from their customers for unique offerings that fit different lifestyle needs.

The Luce’s design marks a departure from Ferrari’s traditional aggressive sporty style. The launch featured a stunning light show with five Luces showcased in various colors, from classic Ferrari red to white and light blue. Inside, the car stays loyal to Ferrari’s luxury roots, featuring leather, glass, and anodized aluminum, along with several physical controls, unlike the all-digital interfaces found in brands like Tesla.

As the automotive industry evolves, electric vehicles are expected to dominate. According to a recent report by the International Energy Agency, global electric vehicle sales reached 10 million in 2022, marking a 55% increase from the previous year. This trend indicates a growing acceptance of EVs among consumers, further emphasizing Ferrari’s strategic move.

Overall, the Luce is not just a car; it’s a statement. It represents Ferrari’s commitment to innovation while preserving the luxury and excitement that fans have come to love. As the automotive landscape shifts, the Luce may very well redefine what it means to be a Ferrari.
