DAVENPORT, Iowa — Rising gas prices are taking a toll on food truck owners in the Quad Cities. Costs for transportation, supplies, and daily operations are increasing.
Martin Garcia Pena, who runs La Flama on Wheels, feels the pinch. “It’s bad. Filling up costs over $100,” he said. Keeping both of his trucks on the road is now much pricier. With the Quad Cities growing, what used to be a quick 10-minute drive has turned into longer trips. For instance, traveling from Rock Island to Bettendorf now takes about 30 minutes.
Customers might only think about meal prices at the window, but fuel increases affect nearly every aspect of running a food truck. “When gas goes up, everything else does too—labor, vehicle maintenance, even transporting employees,” Garcia Pena noted.
Recently, he had to adjust his prices as his suppliers raised theirs. “We don’t want to increase prices, but we have to. It’s not just gas; it’s the suppliers too.” This means customers often bear the brunt of rising costs.
Garcia Pena believes the food industry may feel this impact the most since people expect affordable meals. To keep customers coming back, he’s offering extras, like complimentary chips with each meal. “It’s a small gesture, but we want to add value,” he shared.
After being in the business for over 20 years, Garcia Pena hopes that local patrons will continue to support eateries as prices rise. As he puts it, “We’re all in this together.”
The National Restaurant Association recently reported that 78% of restaurant operators have had to raise menu prices due to rising costs. This trend shows how food trucks and restaurants alike are trying to balance quality with affordability.
As gas prices fluctuate and the demand for local food options continues to grow, the future for food truck operators will depend heavily on consumer support and creative strategies to stay competitive in a changing landscape.
