Kendall Wells Shines as Freshman of the Year in Softball
Kendall Wells, a freshman catcher for Oklahoma Softball, has made headlines by being named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Freshman of the Year. This recognition was announced during the Women’s College World Series banquet on May 26, 2026.
Wells is now the fifth Sooner to receive this honor since it began in 2014, and she stands out as only the second catcher to achieve this award, the first since 2014.
Hailing from Bogart, Georgia, Wells had an outstanding season. She made history by setting multiple records, including the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and NCAA single-season record for freshman home runs with an impressive 39. This performance places her second in NCAA history for home runs in a single season. Additionally, she recorded 88 runs batted in (RBIs), the second-most for a freshman in Oklahoma’s history.
Her season was remarkable for more than just hitting; she also excelled defensively. Wells had an astonishing .993 fielding percentage, committing just two errors behind the plate. This level of skill earned her a spot as a Top 10 Finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year.
Another standout player, her teammate Kai Minor, also made waves this season. Minor was recognized among the NFCA Freshman of the Year finalists and had an impressive batting average of .444. She achieved 84 hits, 70 runs, and maintained a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Wells’ achievement signals a growing trend in college softball, where young talent is reshaping the game. Recent statistics highlight the increasing impact of freshmen, with more athletes entering the limelight at younger ages. In fact, according to the NCAA, around 40% of players making significant contributions to their teams are freshmen, reflecting a shift towards younger talent influencing collegiate athletics.
As college softball evolves, it’s exciting to see how players like Wells are paving the way for future athletes. These young stars not only bring fresh energy but also inspire aspiring players watching from the stands or at home.
