Hinchcliffe’s bit included a controversial joke referring to George Floyd, who tragically died during a police encounter in 2020. He remarked, “The Black community is so proud of you. Right now, George Floyd is looking up at us all laughing so hard he can’t breathe.”
In an interview on The Breakfast Club, Hart addressed the uproar. He acknowledged that the joke might not sit well with many, particularly within the Black community. However, he noted that audiences tuning into roasts generally understand the style of humor that’s expected. “The roast format traditionally involves edgy jokes. Fans know to expect it,” he explained.
When asked if he thought the joke went too far, Hart was nonchalant. “It’s Tony Hinchcliffe. I expect that kind of humor from him.” He also mentioned that while he might not agree with every joke told, he understands the comedic context behind them.
Hart urged people not to hold him responsible for what others say during the roast. “Look, if you’re upset about the roast, that’s valid. But I wasn’t the one making those jokes. I didn’t create the script,” he said. He encouraged audiences to separate him from the content.
The reactions to Hinchcliffe’s joke have been intense. Terrence Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, expressed disappointment at Hart for not challenging Hinchcliffe when the joke was made. He suggested that Hart should have been more assertive, perhaps channeling a more forceful response, akin to “Will Smith energy.”
Additionally, comedian Chelsea Handler, one of the roasters, criticized Hinchcliffe and Shane Gillis, the event’s host, labeling them as “racist,” “bigots,” and “sexist.”
