Enifer is making waves in the pet food industry with its innovative Pekilo mycoprotein. This ingredient, rich in protein and fiber, is set to revolutionize dog treats. Developed in collaboration with Rovio Pet Foods in Finland, Pekilo is designed for semi-moist dog snacks.
Recent trials with 16 dogs over 60 days have shown promising results. The dogs found Pekilo tasty, and the ingredient did not adversely affect their stool quality. It boasts over 60% protein, 22% fiber, and a balanced amino acid profile, making it a strong competitor against traditional meat sources.
Enifer’s journey began back in 1975, when researchers in Finland explored various fungal species for animal feed. Fast forward to 2020, Enifer spun out of the VTT Technical Research Centre, reviving this research to create a food-grade protein source. They now plan to produce up to 3,000 tonnes of Pekilo annually in a new facility costing 33 million euros.
The company’s collaboration with Rovio is part of a growing trend toward treating pets more like family members. Pet owners today look for products that not only taste good but also offer health benefits. This demand fuels interest in novel ingredients like Pekilo.
A 2023 survey showed that 65% of pet owners are willing to pay more for treats with clear nutritional benefits. This trend further validates Enifer’s approach.
On the regulatory side, Enifer has secured self-affirmation as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for human food use in the U.S. and has filed for approvals in Europe and beyond. This complex process shows the challenges facing mycoprotein and other alternative protein ingredients as they seek mainstream acceptance.
With around 49 million euros raised so far, Enifer is gearing up for a Series C funding round to support its growth. The stage is set for Pekilo to make a significant impact on the pet food market, aligning with both health trends and evolving consumer preferences.
