Discover the Arcata Marsh: Your Ultimate Guide to Engaging Lifestyle Tours

The Redwood Region Audubon Society is hosting a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary this Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Bring your binoculars and meet Tylor Bell-Rogers at the end of South I Street (near Klopp Lake) for stunning views of Humboldt Bay and a chance to see a variety of birds along easy walking paths.

Later that day, at 2 p.m., Friends of the Arcata Marsh will offer another free tour. Join leader Ren Bunce in the lobby of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk. This tour covers the history of the area and Arcata’s unique wastewater treatment plant, while also identifying local plants and birds. It happens rain or shine, so dress accordingly!

If you enjoy nature journaling, don’t miss the free monthly session led by naturalist Lynn Jones on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Interpretive Center. While there’s no need to pre-register, it’s limited to the first ten people. Please bring your own paper and something to write with; the group provides clipboards and colored pencils. It’s suitable for all ages, as long as you can stay focused for a while. A pad to sit on is recommended, but binoculars and guidebooks are optional.

This Sunday is also pancake breakfast day at Trinidad School from 8 to 11 a.m. Enjoy a hearty menu including pancakes, eggs, ham or sausage, and biscuits with gravy. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for kids. Plus, there will be a book sale during breakfast with children’s books for just 25 cents, paperbacks for 50 cents, and hardbacks for a dollar. Proceeds support community projects.

Looking for some fun? Join the dance party at the Moose Lodge on Mondays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. for $9. Enjoy live music and a great dance floor. If you’re in the mood for bingo, the Moose Lodge also hosts bingo every Tuesday. The doors open at 5 p.m., with early bird games starting at 6 p.m. Regular games follow at 6:30 p.m., and all proceeds benefit the community.

Mark your calendar for the Humboldt Rose Society’s 57th annual rose show on June 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Redwood Acres. Everyone is invited to enter their roses and floral arrangements for a chance to win prizes. Photography entries are accepted on June 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. and on June 14 from 8 to 10 a.m. The show is free to the public, and raffles will be held as well. To enter floral arrangements, contact the Humboldt Rose Society by June 13 at noon. More details can be found at here.

If you can’t get enough pancakes, there’s another breakfast at Freshwater Grange on June 7 from 8 to 11 a.m. Expect buttermilk or whole-grain pancakes, ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, plus apple compote, orange juice, tea, and coffee. Quilts by Kathy Springmeir will be displayed in the hall too!

Whether you’re birdwatching, enjoying breakfast, or dancing the night away, there’s something for everyone in Arcata!
