In a significant move for India’s defense sector, the Government has taken steps to develop its indigenous 5th Generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) for the Air Force. The Defense Ministry recently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to three key bidders: Larsen and Toubro-Bharat Electronics Limited, Tata Advanced Systems, and Bharat Forge-BEML.
This initiative aims to bolster India’s defense capabilities. The AMCA project was greenlit last year by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who emphasized the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors in the program’s execution.
The estimated budget for the AMCA program is around ₹15,000 crores, with approximately ₹2,000 crores allocated for the Core Integration & Flight Testing Centre, which falls under the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Recently, Singh and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation for this center in Puttaparthi, marking a pivotal step in developing advanced aircraft technologies.
Singh expressed optimism, stating that Puttaparthi would soon be known as a global hub for fifth-generation air combat technology, capable of executing missions with unparalleled speed and precision.
During the Aero India 2025 event earlier this year, a full-scale model of the AMCA was showcased, featuring state-of-the-art technology, including artificial intelligence. This addition is expected to greatly enhance the aircraft’s operational capabilities and keep it competitive among the world’s leading stealth fighters.
Recent studies indicate that nations are investing heavily in advanced military technologies. According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military spending reached approximately $1.92 trillion in 2022, with a significant portion directed toward aerospace developments. This trend showcases the increasingly vital role of cutting-edge air combat capabilities in national defense strategies.
