Bellarmine University lacrosse recently held a charity event that raised $2,800 for two important causes: the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Donate Life. The team collected $1,800 for breast cancer awareness and $1,000 to support organ donation efforts.
Under head coach Andy Whitley, the lacrosse program has now raised a total of $11,200 for the NBCF. This year marked their first collaboration with Donate Life.
The funds came from selling Bellarmine lacrosse T-shirts, which featured designs supporting both charities. This took place during an intrasquad scrimmage and another match at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Seniors Nick Ferge and Grant Crossley led the fundraising efforts. Ferge emphasized the importance of contributing to a cause greater than themselves. “Breast cancer affects so many people,” he said. “Raising awareness and funds is our way of showing support. It’s special to see everyone come together for something that matters beyond the game.”
Crossley shared a personal story about his choice to support Donate Life. “I chose this cause to honor my late friend Billy Lowe, a donor who passed away in 2020. It means a lot to me, and seeing the team wear shirts with the logo reminds us that we’re making a difference.”
A recent study shows that community-driven initiatives not only raise funds but also foster a sense of unity among participants. This reflects a larger trend in sports where teams engage in activism and support meaningful issues.
