Louisville, Ky. – Exciting news for Carolina Softball! Emily LeGette and Sanaa Thompson have both been named All-Americans by the NFCA, making history for the program with two selections in one season.
LeGette, now recognized as a consensus All-American, is the first Tar Heel since 1998 to earn first-team honors. Thompson joins her as the first second-team selection since 2017.
LeGette had a standout season, breaking several Carolina records. She hit 27 home runs, had a slugging percentage of 1.117, and racked up 153 total bases. With 76 RBIs and a batting average of .467, she made her mark in the record books. Remarkably, in just one season at Carolina, she surpassed her total output from two seasons at Virginia Tech.
This season, she has received numerous accolades, including being a top 25 finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and earning multiple player of the week honors.
Thompson also lit up the field, setting a program record with 74 runs scored and achieving second for hits with 84. Her batting average of .462 and on-base percentage of .524 add to her impressive performance. She’s climbing the career records too, holding the best on-base percentage in program history.
Both players have helped make Carolina Softball competitive at a high level. They’re not just breaking records; they’re setting a standard for future athletes.
This season marks the second consecutive year for Carolina to have All-Americans, a feat not accomplished since 2002-03. Head coach Megan Smith Lyon has guided these talents to success, now with over 100 wins in just three seasons.
In today’s competitive landscape, recruiting top talent is crucial. Recent statistics show that elite college programs are investing heavily in facilities and coaching to attract the best players. Schools that focus on holistic development and athlete well-being tend to have more success securing high-profile recruits.
LeGette and Thompson’s achievements shine a light on what can happen when talent meets opportunity. Their stories inspire both current and aspiring athletes, proving that with determination, records are meant to be broken. The future looks bright for Carolina Softball!
