Co-designed with community input, the Red Hill Registry aims to track health outcomes from fuel exposure and offer support for those affected by the fuel spill. The University of Hawaiʻi helps facilitate this initiative. So far, over 2,600 people have pre-enrolled. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that around 93,000 U.S. Navy water users were impacted by the contaminated drinking water.
To join the registry, you must complete a two-step process: first, a pre-enrollment questionnaire, followed by either a baseline or an expanded questionnaire. As of now, only 423 participants have filled out their questionnaires. The registry team is actively encouraging more participants to finish this process.
Sanie Weldon, the registry’s director, emphasizes the importance of community feedback. “We want insight on how to improve completion rates,” she says. Community input shapes how the registry enhances its tools and support.
In March 2026, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a report highlighting the need for ongoing data collection via the registry. This research is crucial for understanding the health impacts of jet fuel exposure and improving community resilience.
