San Antonio Food Bank Ramping Up for Summer Needs
In recent weeks, the San Antonio Food Bank has stepped up its game, helping feed an extra 22,000 people. This surge comes as students across 29 counties get ready for summer break. Eric Cooper, the Food Bank’s President and CEO, shared that summer is a peak time for them.
He explained, “We’ll be preparing tens of thousands of meals to ensure kids don’t go hungry.”
With around 200,000 kids in Bexar County who usually rely on school meals now home for the summer, the demand rises. Families often struggle more during this time due to increased costs for groceries and childcare. Rising fuel prices add another layer of stress for parents already budgeting for summer expenses.
Cooper noted, “Our goal is to keep up with demand.” The Food Bank works with school districts across Texas to create meals from its culinary center. These meals will be distributed at nearly 200 locations in the community.
Additionally, the Food Bank is providing grocery boxes to families who register, supporting them in making meals at home. While the Food Bank is committed to feeding families, Cooper highlighted the importance of community support. “We need food donations, financial help, and volunteers,” he stressed.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that nearly 38 million Americans, including 12 million children, are food insecure. This shows just how crucial organizations like the San Antonio Food Bank are in tackling hunger, especially during the summer months when children usually miss out on school meals.
