Did you hear about the fossil mix-up in Alaska? Scientists recently revealed that what was thought to be mammoth bones for decades were actually whale bones. This surprising finding came from research published in the Journal of Quaternary Science.
The story starts in the 1950s when archaeologist Otto Geist discovered bones near Fairbanks, Alaska, in an area known for its impressive prehistoric finds. He assumed they belonged to a woolly mammoth, primarily due to their size and location.
The bones went to the University of Alaska’s Museum of the North, where they sat misidentified for nearly 70 years. It wasn’t until recent tests that researchers found the bones were between 2,000 and 3,000 years old—way too young for mammoths, which went extinct around 10,000 years ago.
In a twist, carbon and nitrogen testing showed that these bones came from marine environments, indicating the animals had likely fed on ocean creatures. DNA analysis confirmed they belonged to two whale species: a minke whale and a North Pacific right whale. The team considered it a remarkable “case of mistaken identity.”
But how did these whale fossils end up so far inland? One theory suggests they were moved by scavengers or indigenous people who used whale bones for tools. The more widely accepted explanation? Geist may have misidentified their original location, thinking the bones were further from the coastline than they actually were.
This discovery has implications beyond just correcting a historical error. Matthew Wooller, a biogeochemist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, noted that these specimens can help scientists understand whale behavior better. “Now you’ve got two ancient whale specimens documented and genetically typed. Those might be useful for future whale studies,” he explained to KTUU-TV.
This isn’t the only time fossil misidentifications have occurred. Recently in Texas, what appeared to be regular dinosaur bones turned out to be Tylosaurus Rex, a massive predatory sea reptile from the Cretaceous period. As researcher Amelia Zietlow humorously noted, “Everything is bigger in Texas, including the mosasaurs.”
