The Australian consumer group CHOICE recently shared some insights on the most cost-effective heater for winter. Electric heaters can seem like a quick fix for warmth, but not all are easy on the wallet.
CHOICE analyzed fan heaters, oil heaters, and panel heaters over a typical winter of three months. They looked at energy usage, costs per hour, and heat output. The results were surprising: the oil column heater emerged as the most economical option.
According to their findings, running an oil column heater costs an average of $324 over those three months. The panel heater followed, costing about $398, while the fan heater was the priciest at $408. Though the difference between the cheapest and most expensive is $84, every cent counts, especially with rising living costs affecting many households.
Interestingly, the oil heater only uses 65 cents per hour, boasting a high output of 2400 watts. This efficiency makes it appealing over extended use. However, it’s worth noting that oil heaters can take longer to warm up a room compared to faster fan heaters. If you need heat quickly, a fan or panel heater might be a better option despite the higher running costs.
CHOICE emphasized that the right choice depends on your heating needs and room size. “You can find small fan heaters for as low as $30, but their effectiveness and long-term costs can vary,” they pointed out.
