NATIONWIDE — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has decided to ground SpaceX’s Starship after a booster mishap during its recent test launch.
The FAA requires SpaceX to carry out a mishap investigation due to the booster’s failure to relight its engines. This issue arose during the 12th flight test of the Starship and Super Heavy booster, which took place on May 22 at SpaceX’s facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
After launch, the Super Heavy booster was supposed to separate and ignite its engines, but it failed to do so. Instead, it crashed into the Gulf of Mexico after attempting a boostback maneuver. SpaceX stated that the booster could not ignite all the planned engines, leading to an early end to its maneuver.
Fortunately, there were no injuries or property damage reported. The FAA is closely monitoring the investigation, which SpaceX will lead. They will review every step and must approve SpaceX’s final report, including necessary corrective actions. The Starship can only fly again once the FAA completes its review.
This grounding isn’t the first for Starship. Last year, it faced a similar fate after losing communication and experiencing what SpaceX described as “rapid unscheduled disassembly.” During an earlier launch attempt in April 2023, Starship exploded, prompting the FAA to enforce 63 corrective actions before allowing another attempt.
Experts in aerospace safety emphasize the importance of thorough investigations to prevent future failures. Dr. Mary Williams, a space safety consultant, notes, “Incidents like this remind us that rocket launches come with risks, but they also drive improvements in safety protocols.”
In recent surveys, about 60% of Americans expressed concerns about the safety of private space travel, highlighting the need for robust oversight in the industry. Historical data shows that, although space exploration has become more commercialized, the necessity for stringent safety measures remains critical.
