Graduation season is here! Every May and June, students from high schools and universities celebrate achievements. It’s a time filled with excitement, joy, and even some anxiety about what’s next. One staple of this season is the graduation speech, which can leave a lasting impression.
Throughout my academic journey, I’ve listened to countless speeches. Some stand out because they brought humor and joy. Others moved the audience with stories of resilience in the face of tough challenges. A common theme in many speeches is to encourage graduates to stay true to themselves and strive to make a positive impact in the world.
This year, many speeches highlighted the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). While this technology promises innovation, the reactions were mixed. Some see it as the next Industrial Revolution, but for graduates entering a challenging job market, AI can feel daunting. Entry-level jobs that once welcomed fresh graduates are being replaced by automation.
During a recent graduation ceremony, I shared a message inspired by Sister Thea Bowman, a beloved figure known for her unwavering faith. She often reminded us, “Remember who you are and whose you are.” Her life was filled with trials—discrimination, illness, and loss—but through it all, she found strength in her faith.
Sister Thea’s story resonates today, as many graduates face uncertainties. Just like her, having a strong foundation in faith can help navigate the challenges ahead. As graduates step into new phases of life, it’s important for them and their families to remember this supportive resource.
Parents can encourage their graduates to explore faith communities or campus ministries. These can provide a sense of belonging and support as they transition into new environments. For those moving away for work or further education, finding a new church can be invaluable for connection and guidance. A thoughtful gesture, like gifting a new Bible, can serve as a reminder that faith is always within reach.
As we celebrate this graduation season, let’s honor the spirit of perseverance and the grounding strength of faith. It’s more than just a ceremony; it’s about stepping boldly into the future.
