India’s Initiative: Building 14 New Schools to Support Nepal’s Earthquake-Affected Communities

India is investing 560.2 million Nepali Rupees to build 14 schools in eight districts of Nepal that were hit hard by earthquakes. This initiative highlights India’s commitment to help Nepal recover and grow after natural disasters.

The Central Level Project Implementation Unit-Education, part of Nepal’s Ministry of Education and Sports, recently finalized agreements for this project. According to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, these schools will be spread across Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Dolakha, Kathmandu, Kavrepalanchowk, Ramechhap, and Sindhupalchok. These areas faced severe damage during earthquakes, especially the major quake in 2015, which tragically claimed nearly 9,000 lives.

The new schools will follow Nepal’s standards for earthquake-resistant construction. They’ll include classrooms equipped with furniture, academic blocks, and separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls.

This isn’t India’s first venture to support Nepal. Earlier, India completed and handed over 70 schools and the Tribhuvan University Central Library in January 2024 as part of its post-earthquake recovery efforts.

Experts say education is crucial for rebuilding communities after disasters. Investing in schools not only provides shelter for learning but also fosters hope and resilience in affected areas. Research shows that communities with better education infrastructure are more likely to recover faster from natural disasters.

The collaboration between India and Nepal continues to strengthen. It’s a symbol of support in times of need, showing that nations can work together for a brighter future.
