A man who tried to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna two years ago expressed remorse in court before his trial verdict. Although the attack was stopped, authorities canceled Swift’s three performances scheduled for August 2024 due to security concerns.
The defendant, a 21-year-old Austrian identified as Beran A, faces serious charges, including terrorist offenses and ties to a terrorist organization. He admitted guilt on the first day of his trial in April, risking up to 20 years in prison.
Beran A allegedly planned to use knives or homemade explosives against concertgoers outside the Ernst Happel Stadium. Many fans had flown in for Swift’s record-setting Eras tour. Prosecutors revealed that he connected with members of Islamic State, discussing weapon purchases and bomb-making in the lead-up to the planned attack.
Alongside Beran A is Arda K, who is also facing charges. Together, they, along with another individual detained in Saudi Arabia, supposedly prepared to launch simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UAE during Ramadan 2024, all in the name of IS. However, Beran A pleaded not guilty to charges related to those attacks.
During the closing arguments, prosecutors called for the men’s conviction, according to the Austria Press Agency. Beran A’s lawyer, Anna Mair, argued her client was “not an ideological mastermind.” In a heartfelt moment before the court adjourned, he simply stated, “I would just like to say that I am sorry.”
