The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is issuing a warning about “male-to-male” extension cords. These cords can lead to dangerous situations like electrocution or fire hazards.
Recently, the CPSC announced that major online retailers—such as Walmart, eBay, and AliExpress—are removing these cords from their platforms. They urge anyone using these cords to stop immediately and dispose of them safely.
So, what’s the issue? These cords are often used to connect generators to home electrical systems, a practice called backfeeding. This can create very dangerous conditions, resulting in serious injuries or even fatalities. The cords typically come in blue, red, or yellow and have two male ends with a three-prong black plug.
Peter A. Feldman, the acting chair of the CPSC, stated, “These cords, sometimes called ‘suicide cords,’ have no safe household use and pose extreme risks.” Additionally, the short length of these cords often pushes generators closer to homes or in tight spaces, increasing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
When it’s time to dispose of these cords, consumers need to unplug them carefully and avoid touching the exposed prongs to prevent accidental contact.
A concerning statistic highlights that nearly 200 people die each year in the U.S. due to carbon monoxide poisoning, often linked to improper generator use. This reiterates the importance of being cautious with electrical products.
