Nine towns in Maine are getting a financial boost to help them prepare for severe storms and flooding. These grants come from the Community Resilience Partnership program, which was launched in 2021 under Governor Mills. The goal is to make communities more resilient while saving taxpayers money through energy-efficient upgrades.
Here’s how each town is set to benefit:
- Rockland: $79,850 for design work at Snow Marine Park and the Rockland Harbor Trail to improve storm resilience.
- South Thomaston: $75,000 to expand solar power and battery storage at the public library/community center.
- Union: $80,000 for transportation planning in the Union Common Village area.
- Warren: $80,000 for village transportation upgrades.
- Belfast: $80,000 for a shoreline restoration project at Heritage Park.
- Northport: $70,685 for stormwater assessment and a pilot composting project.
- Lincolnville: $79,962 for assessing harbor resilience.
- Searsport: $74,024 for shoreline stabilization and communication planning.
- North Haven: $80,000 for designing a new wastewater system.
This initiative has gained momentum over the past five years. It has expanded to cover nearly 300 communities, distributing about $25 million in funding for local projects.
Governor Janet Mills highlighted the importance of these efforts: “Through the Community Resilience Partnership, nearly 300 towns, cities, and tribal governments across Maine are taking proactive steps to prepare for climate effects that threaten lives and livelihoods. I’m proud of our historic investments in protecting Maine from severe weather.”
These investments represent a crucial response to rising climate challenges. For instance, a recent study from the NOAA indicates that coastal communities are experiencing higher sea levels — a trend that’s expected to continue.
By focusing on renewable energy and improved infrastructure, Maine is not just addressing immediate needs but also planning for a more sustainable future. Communities are recognizing that collaboration and forward-thinking strategies are essential to safeguard their environments and enhance quality of life.
