Keanu Reeves recently spoke out in support of his longtime friend, Carl Rinsch, who faces over ten years in prison for scamming Netflix out of $11 million. Rinsch was found guilty of serious charges, including money laundering and wire fraud, after he misused funds intended for the sci-fi series “White Horse.”
Rinsch, a director known for his work with Reeves on the 2011 film “47 Ronin,” received $44 million from Netflix for the series. However, he requested an extra $11 million, claiming he needed it to finish production. Instead, he spent the money on luxury items like a Ferrari, several Rolls-Royces, and designer clothing. He even transferred funds into cryptocurrency and personal accounts, leaving the series uncompleted.
In a heartfelt letter to the judge, Reeves described their friendship and expressed concern for Rinsch. He urged the court for leniency, highlighting Rinsch’s creativity and the joy he brings to others. Reeves described Rinsch’s project as an “unfinished work of art.” He acknowledged the gravity of Rinsch’s actions but suggested that his friend often overextends himself, which leads to trouble.
“Carl can self-sabotage by amplifying the scale of what’s negotiated,” Reeves wrote. He emphasized Rinsch’s positive impact on those around him and hoped the judge would consider a lighter sentence.
Rinsch’s sentencing is set for June 29, where he could face up to 10 years in prison. Alongside the prison term, he is expected to pay Netflix $11 million in restitution, plus an additional $4.4 million in attorney fees.
