The Los Angeles Assyrian Food Festival is a vibrant celebration with roots that stretch back 7,000 years. This year, the festival kicks off on Saturday, running through the weekend from noon to 10 p.m. It’s a unique opportunity for everyone to dive into the rich culture of the Assyrian community.
Father George Bet-Rasho, leader at St. Mary’s Assyrian Church in Tarzana, highlights the festival’s significance: “We’ve been cooking for almost 7,000 years. We’ve learned a thing or two, and it’s really, really good.” This statement reflects the pride in their culinary traditions that have been handed down through generations.
The Assyrians, often called the “Cradle of Civilization,” have made significant contributions to history, including early innovations in weaponry and communication systems. Despite facing violence and genocide in the 19th century, they now find refuge in places like the U.S. and Australia. In Los Angeles alone, over 5,000 Assyrians call this city home, making it one of the largest Assyrian communities in the U.S. after Chicago.
The festival serves not just as a chance to taste delicious food but also as a way to share the Assyrian story. “This weekend gives everyone the chance to learn about the Assyrian people and participate in their traditions,” says Father Bet-Rasho.
Attendees can look forward to traditional dishes that connect the past and present. Irene Cruz, an ABC7 anchor, noted that the recipes being served have traveled from ancient Mesopotamia to modern-day Los Angeles.
One of the highlights will be performances by the Bet-Nahrain Dance Team. They’ll showcase intricate, handmade costumes from Iraq and present dances that originated nearly 3,000 years ago.
In recent years, food festivals have surged in popularity, with a 12% increase in attendance reported over the past five years across the U.S. Many festival-goers express excitement on social media, sharing their favorite dishes and experiences.
