A federal judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund.” This fund was part of a controversial settlement involving Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization.
U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema issued the ruling after prosecutors sought to block the fund last week. The Department of Justice, which is overseeing the fund, did not provide immediate comments on the order.
Criticism of the fund has come from both sides of the political aisle. Many see it as a “slush fund” for Trump’s allies, which has raised concerns about a lack of public oversight. Recent reports suggest that Senate Republican leaders delayed a vote on funding for ICE and the Border Patrol, partly due to worries about how this fund is managed.
While legal motions remain pending, the Trump administration cannot take further actions regarding the fund. This includes transferring money, considering claims, or distributing any funds.
According to the judge, the order is necessary to ensure no funds are irrevocably disbursed while legal motions are in play. However, the process for applying to receive funds can’t start until five commissioners are appointed to oversee the distribution. Despite this, some individuals claiming to have been targeted already requested money.
Questions remain regarding how applicants would formally apply, but the pool of potential applicants is large, as indicated by the DOJ.
In a declaration linked to the lawsuit, Andrew Floyd, who once led the Capitol Siege Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, expressed concern. He said the administration is essentially rewarding those he helped investigate after the events of January 6. Floyd described this move as an attempt to favor political allies while leaving investigators like himself at a disadvantage.
