The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Human Services Department is kicking off its 2026 Summer Food Service Program on Monday, June 1. This program aims to provide free meals to children aged 18 and under at various locations throughout Calcasieu Parish.
Lunch will be served daily, Monday through Friday, until July 24. However, note that the program will close on June 19 for Juneteenth and July 3 for the Fourth of July. No registration is needed, and all children can participate, regardless of their background or ability. Meals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at these locations:
- Iowa High School, 401 West Miller Ave., Iowa
- J.I. Watson Elementary School, 201 East First St., Iowa
- Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2009 N. Simmons St., Lake Charles
- Moss Bluff Middle School, 297 Park Road, Moss Bluff
- First Baptist Church, 401 S. Huntington St., Sulphur
- Kyle Street Park (SPAR), 200 Kyle St., Sulphur
- Sulphur High Ninth Grade Campus, 600 Willow Ave., Sulphur
- W.T. Henning Elementary School, 774 Henning Drive, Sulphur
- Westlake Recreation Center, 1221 Sampson St., Westlake
- Westwood Elementary School, 900 Sampson St., Westlake
Additionally, breakfast will be served from 8 to 9 a.m. at several sites:
- Iowa High School
- J.I. Watson Elementary School
- Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center
- Kyle Street Park (SPAR)
- Sulphur High Ninth Grade Campus
- Westlake Recreation Center
- Westwood Elementary School
Felicia Davis, the program coordinator, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. “Behind every meal served is a message to every child: You matter, and you are cared for,” she said. Last year, the program provided over 12,372 breakfasts and 27,219 lunches, fighting summer hunger for thousands of kids.
It’s crucial to note that food must be eaten on-site, so no meals can be taken home.
This program is part of a larger effort to address food insecurity, which affects approximately 10.5% of households in the United States, according to recent government statistics. Programs like these not only provide nutrition but also foster a sense of community support during the summer months when school is out.
