Emilia Clarke Reflects on Her Franchise Flops: Why She Has No Regrets and What She Learned

Emilia Clarke became a household name as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. The show had a huge impact on her career, but the final season didn’t sit well with many fans. The way her character transformed from hero to villain received a lot of backlash. Although this wasn’t Clarke’s fault, it left some fans with mixed feelings about her.

Since then, Emilia has taken on various roles in dramas and rom-coms. However, her ventures into major franchises like Solo: A Star Wars Story, Terminator Genisys, and the Marvel series Secret Invasion haven’t always received the best reviews.

Despite this, she maintains a positive outlook. In a recent talk with Variety, she joked about the lukewarm reception to Secret Invasion, saying, “No one liked that show, guys.” She also reflected on her experiences with Star Wars and Terminator, expressing a sense of humor about taking roles in established franchises. “These were jobs I said yes to,” she noted.

Clarke emphasized that she doesn’t take these setbacks personally. “I entered into existing franchises, so when they don’t work out, it’s not personal,” she shared. This perspective has led her to be more selective about future projects. “I said no to a lot… I need to wait for the right thing.”

Looking back at her time on Game of Thrones, she still has warm feelings for the creators, calling them “geniuses.” However, she admits she didn’t have much say in shaping Daenerys beyond her performance. “I was given the seasons, and I did my best to understand and track every choice she made so it felt like mine,” she explained.

Reflecting on her journey, she said, “I have gone through every circuitous route to get to the place that I am now. I’m grateful for everything Game of Thrones gave me. I no longer feel trapped by it; instead, I feel lucky that it happened and even luckier to understand it now.”

This growth highlights how artists can evolve from challenging experiences. Overcoming mixed receptions can transform not just careers, but also personal outlooks, allowing actors to embrace their pasts while looking forward to new opportunities.
