A bus collided with several vehicles on Interstate 95 in Virginia early Friday, resulting in five fatalities and numerous injuries. The accident occurred around 2:35 a.m. in Stafford County, close to Quantico. Tragically, all the deceased were in the cars that the bus struck. In total, 44 individuals were taken to hospitals, with three in critical condition.
Initial reports indicate that traffic was slowing down for a construction zone when the bus failed to stop in time, hitting six vehicles. The bus had about 34 passengers onboard at the time. Peyton Vogel, a spokesperson for the Federal Transit Administration, described the scene as devastating.
Four of the deceased were part of the Doncev family from Greenfield, Massachusetts. The family included a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, and their two children, ages 13 and 7. The fifth victim was a 25-year-old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts. The bus driver, identified as Jing S. Dong, 48, may face charges as the investigation continues.
Emergency responses were swift, with nearby hospitals treating patients rapidly. Mary Washington Healthcare reported receiving 19 victims. While most were treated and released, a few remain in serious and critical condition.
The bus was operated by E&P Travel Inc., which has a satisfactory safety record according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. However, this incident raises questions about bus safety regulations. Federal authorities have been working on improving interstate bus safety for years, especially after a series of crashes in 2008 that led to 41 fatalities. Investigations revealed that driver-related issues, like fatigue and inattention, were significant factors in these accidents.
In light of this recent tragedy, experts suggest that there’s a need for better driver training and stricter safety checks. Advocates argue that a nationwide database for tracking drivers’ histories could help reduce risks in the future.
While the southbound lanes of I-95 reopened by noon, the crash has left a lasting impact on the community and highlighted ongoing concerns about transportation safety on busy highways.
