John Knoll, the visual effects supervisor for the film, has been involved with Grogu since the beginning in Season 1 of “The Mandalorian.” He recognized the character’s potential early on. Knoll recalls his first look at Grogu through stunning concept art. “It was a design challenge,” he admits, but once the final concept came together, they knew they had something special.
Creating Grogu has involved over 100 talented artists and technicians. Collaboration between puppet builders, animatronic specialists, and visual effects experts brought the character to life. Legacy Effects built various puppets, including two main versions and a fully waterproof one. The puppet’s materials include brass, aluminum, and advanced 3D-printed nylon, adding to its durability and charm.
The team learned and adapted their techniques from the show to the film, resulting in a Grogu with even more abilities, like articulated fingers that were not previously possible. Knoll humorously noted that their partners at Legacy Effects always aim to outdo themselves, delivering an exquisite puppet that exceeded earlier expectations.
While some actions like jumping were done through CGI, the majority of Grogu’s scenes featured practical effects. For instance, in one iconic scene, two puppeteers brought Grogu to life as he tapped Mando’s helmet. Knoll emphasized that director Jon Favreau wanted to maintain a nostalgic “puppet charm” reminiscent of the original trilogy—acknowledging the artifice without shying away from it.
Interestingly, social media has played a big role in Grogu’s viral success. Memes, fan art, and even TikTok dances featuring Grogu have exploded online, creating a community of enthusiasts who bond over this whimsical character.
With its unique blend of artistry and technology, Grogu holds a special place in the hearts of fans. As Knoll stated, “It’s an advance over what we even had in the movie,” hinting at the future possibilities for this character. Who knows? Grogu may one day become fully autonomous!
