Empower Your Business: How Scotiabank’s Workshop Enhances Digital Skills for Women Entrepreneurs

Women-owned businesses are increasingly turning to technology to thrive, especially after attending a workshop hosted by the Scotiabank Women Initiative (SWI). This event, called “Deepening Business Resilience Through E-Commerce and New Technology,” attracted women entrepreneurs from various fields like law, manufacturing, and tourism. They gathered to learn how technology can help them navigate disruptions.

Nadine Heywood, the SWI Programme Lead, emphasized that the workshop was a thoughtful response to the challenges businesses face today. The COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, and other challenges have significantly affected companies. However, some have found ways to adapt and grow. “Our focus on resilience was meant to highlight how technology can future-proof businesses and create new opportunities,” Heywood said.

At the workshop, Marcelle Smart, founder of SmartNote2Self, discussed the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI). She explained that many entrepreneurs work with small teams, and AI can help them stay efficient. Smart led an exercise assessing business resilience using a tool she created for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). “With the upcoming hurricane season, it’s crucial for SMEs to be ready. AI can automate tasks, boost productivity, and cover areas where businesses may lack resources,” Smart noted.

Gail Whylie, a senior manager at Scotiabank, shared insights about digital payments and online transaction security. She stated, “Our e-commerce solutions help clients accept online payments through secure platforms, with built-in fraud detection to prevent losses.” This makes it easier for women entrepreneurs to manage their finances more safely.

The workshop also highlighted the need for women entrepreneurs to have better access to financing, education, and support. Aybarinee Campbell Mendez, founder of Mendez Kare, shared her story about resilience during challenges. Her focus on e-commerce has been vital for her business’s success since its launch in Jamaica in 2022.

According to recent studies, women-led businesses are rapidly growing in number. A report from American Express revealed that between 2014 and 2019, women-owned businesses grew by 21%. Events like the SWI workshop play a key role in equipping these women with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in a competitive landscape.

The Scotiabank Women Initiative aims to empower these entrepreneurs by providing tailored financing solutions, advisory services, and networking opportunities. This supportive environment encourages innovation and resilience among women-led businesses.
