Kane Parsons is making waves at the box office with Backrooms. His $10 million adaptation of a popular YouTube short film is projected to rake in around $80 million during its opening weekend—potentially even reaching $90 million. This could mark the biggest debut in A24’s history. Excitingly, it’s anticipated to take the top spot after earning about $38 million by Friday, which includes its Thursday previews.
The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a down-and-out architect who discovers a seemingly endless series of rooms in the furniture store he manages. Notably, around 86% of the audience is under 35, with more than half being younger than 25.
Parsons’s success comes on the heels of fellow YouTuber Curry Barker, who has also risen to prominence with Obsession. This film, which cost only $750,000 to make, is breaking records by gaining in box office revenue in its second and third weekends—something that’s rare. Analysts estimate it could end the weekend with about $106.8 million domestically, making it Focus Features’ highest-grossing film ever.
Barker is now in high demand as Hollywood wants to see what he will create next. Meanwhile, he’s editing Anything But Ghosts and weighing a reboot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24.
This wave of fresh talent feels like a shift in Hollywood, with Parsons and Barker’s films standing out amidst longstanding franchises like Star Wars. The latest entry, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, is expected to earn about $24 million this weekend, which is a drop of around 70% compared to its opening. So far, it has brought in $171 million globally against a budget of $165 million. Disney considers the film’s influence on merchandise and streaming as part of its overall success.
In more recent releases, comedian Nate Bargatze’s movie, The Breadwinner, is also working to capture audience attention. It’s likely to end up in fifth place with an estimated $7.5 million for the weekend. While critics haven’t been kind, scoring it only 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences seem to enjoy it more, with a rating of 87%.
Lastly, Focus Features’ WWII drama Pressure, featuring Brendan Fraser and Andrew Scott, is projected to earn around $5.4 million this weekend.
