Althea Laing is a name that shines brightly in the fashion world. Recently, she celebrated her 70th birthday, reflecting on a remarkable life filled with achievements and challenges.
“My birthday was unforgettable. I was surrounded by loyal friends who have supported me through thick and thin,” she shared. This celebration marked the first time in 35 years that she acknowledged her birthday. It’s especially meaningful after the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, which deeply affected her life.
Despite this setback, Althea remains positive and inspiring. Reaching the milestone of 70 is a significant achievement, one that she views as a blessing. “Anything beyond this is just ‘brawta,’” she says, embracing every moment.
In the modeling industry, Althea holds a special place. She opened doors for the next generation of models and takes pride in her journey. “I’ve always looked up to Grace Jones, and our similar looks helped me find my way in fashion,” she explained.
Althea’s style has evolved, remaining timeless and elegant. She prefers solid, versatile pieces that make up a capsule wardrobe. “My fashion hasn’t changed much; I’m in a period of restoration,” she stated.
Winning the Miss Jamaica Fashion Model pageant in 1985 was a highlight. “I left with all the major prizes, and it surprised me just as much as everyone else,” she recalled. She also became the first Jamaican model to grace the cover of Essence magazine, an achievement she accomplished twice, in 1990 and 1996.
Her accolades don’t stop there. Althea has received numerous awards, including the RJRGLEANER Woman of Distinction Award, and has been recognized in the Pulse Hall of Fame for Beauty.
Althea cherishes her past, especially the impactful 1970s. “The moment I stepped into Excelsior High School, everything changed for the better. I became fearless and learned to love myself deeply,” she noted. This confidence was instilled by her mother, who was her greatest supporter.
Today, Althea is dedicated to youth empowerment and helping survivors of domestic abuse. “I find joy in nurturing the youth. I work quietly with underserved communities and enjoy giving motivational talks in schools,” she said. She emphasizes the importance of self-esteem and communication skills, aiming to inspire the next generation.
This summer, Althea plans to hold workshops for teens and tweens in Kingston, offering guidance and encouragement. She has also been working on her book, which is a long-awaited project.
At 70, Althea Laing continues to shine, breaking stereotypes and paving the way for others in the fashion industry and beyond. Her legacy is one of grace, resilience, and empowerment.
