The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) is celebrating its 62nd anniversary, marking years of impactful work for community newspapers and online publications. As news evolves with digital changes, PPI is focusing on two key areas: upholding trust in the media and finding new ways to generate revenue.
From June 4 to 6, PPI will host several events at Lucky Chinatown Hotel in Manila. These include the General Membership Meeting, Community Press Awards, a National Press Forum, and a Media-Citizen Councils Roundtable Discussion.
The Community Press Awards, supported by Nickel Asia Corporation, will honor outstanding journalism in various categories. Notable guests like Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko’ Moreno Domagoso will be present. Categories for awards include Best News Website, Best in Photojournalism, Best Environmental Reporting, and more.
Finalists for the Weekly Category feature outlets like Baguio Chronicle and Mindanao Observer. In the Daily Category, finalists include Daily Guardian and Sunstar Daily. This recognition is crucial in a media landscape often clouded by misinformation.
The National Press Forum will address the latest challenges and opportunities media faces today. Jose Bayani D. Baylon from Nickel Asia will give the keynote speech. Additionally, media advisor Jaemark Tordecilla will lead a workshop on using AI in community newsrooms, an increasingly relevant tool in today’s media landscape.
The PPI Media-Citizen Councils Roundtable will gather heads from 14 councils to discuss local issues affecting their communities.
This anniversary celebration has garnered support from various sponsors, including the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and SM Investments, highlighting the importance of media in society.
